The castle was initially built to control the trading and traffic practices that used to occur around the Lake Geneva region and towards Italy. Hence, it held great significance during the twelfth century.

A couple of centuries back the castle has lost its significance and was used as a storage space. But soon became a major tourist attraction for tourists travelling up to the Lac Léman region.
