India Gate
The infamous India Gate, a war memorial Delhi Heritages, is a monumental arch to commemorate the lives of 70,000 Indian soldiers who passed away in the wars fought between 1914 and 1919. It bears the name of more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers who sacrificed themselves in the Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919. The structure is mainly carved from Red and Yellow sandstones and underneath the arch gateway stands an installation of reversed L1A1 self-loading rifle, capped by war helmet on a plinth made from black marble. Four urns surround the structure with permanently burning flames and each face of the cenotaph has the words “Amar Jawan” inscribed in a gold letter to remind the nation of the soldiers who laid their lives down for our country. Also, about 150 meters to the east of India Gate, a 73-foot canopy is erected as a part of the tribute to the deceased Emperor of India. Aside from the sentimental values associated to the monument, you can lay a spread for a warm picnic on the large expanse of lush green lawns nearby or enjoy the mesmerizing display of coloured lights from the fountains when the night falls.
